The Mirabal´s House
During the presidency of Trujillo from 1930 to 1961, a dictator, The Dominican Republic was wounded of suffering, and many people were opposed to him but no one would say anything because of the fear, except the four brave sisters who were opposed to him, and were involved in underground movements against his government. Maria, Teresa, and Patricia Mirabal were assassinated on November 25, 1960 but their assassination became the sisters into figures both of braveness and idealism.
“The dictator Rafael Trujillo was born on October 24, 1891 in San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic. He became president of the Dominican Republic in 1930 through political maneuvering and torture. He officially held the office until 1938, when he chose a puppet successor. He resumed his official position from 1942 to 1952, but continued to rule by force until his assassination on May 30, 1961”. (Biography.comEditors, 2017). He felt in love of one of the sister Patricia Mirabal who was already married, but she despised him what trigger the hate of Trujillo to the Mirabal’s family. Trujillo put in jail Patricia’s Husband and cancel her lawyer diploma as a punishment for her contempt. Finally, he ordered their death when the sisters were on the way back of visiting the husband in jail, the car fell by a ravine that burn into flames where the sisters lost their lives.
In an excursion from the school, me and my classmates visited the Mirabal´s house which is a historical place in The Dominican Republic. I was very excited because that house is a kind of museum where the belongings of the sisters are conserved over the decades. This house was declared as museum in 1994 by Dede Mirabal as honor in memory of her sisters and is in Salcedo, Dominican Republic like three hours away from the capital of Santo Domingo. It is built up of wood as well as the floor inside all the house is around of memories since their childhood up to their adult
in the living room, I could see artefacts like the identification of the sisters, and the long braid that was taken from Patricia Mirabal in the morgue also their shoes, handbags and so on. It has three bedroom and bathrooms with the clothes and the things that they used as their hobbies like the sewing machine and the painting frame.
Outside of the house, there is a big garden with butterflies around, also the kitchen of the house is outside because in the previous years the people used to have an outside kitchen. On the other side of the garden, are located three statues where the bodies of the sisters are buried and around it, there is water source that inspire live. During the haul, I also saw the vehicle where the sister had the tragic accident, at least the part of it because the car burned into flames that day. When you are in that garden, it feels like the sisters still are living there.
The Mirabal´s house can seem simple but it´s not. It is a living proof of three heroines that fought by their ideals, although they pay with their lives by defending their values, they showed us that we should fight by the things we want to achieve. The mirabal sisters died but, their house keeps their memory alive.
