Global Digital Tax (GDT) — creating an interface

Global Digital Tax (GDT) is a global tax on content host revenues initiated by world governments. GDT is still in the process of being designed and implemented, however governments have no current plans to apply the design of GDT to content, rights or transactions. Government planning currently only applies to content host revenues. This limited scope presents an opportunity to foster conversations about GDT and what it could be. For example, taxing a combination of revenue, content and transactions could promote an even healthier ecosystem. CultureBanked and Kendraio are exploring these possibilities to help open this conversation.

We still have a very long way to go before we know how to tax digital assets globally. Kendraio and CultureBanked are investigating tools to model what a future GDT landscape might look like. The first of these experiments explores how contributors could notify content hosts to treat selected content as eligible for GDT.

What follows is a demonstration that simulates interaction between content contributors and content hosts.

Wireframe mockup

First, we mocked up the design in Google Slides.

Kendraio App Flow

Then we created the CultureBanked Global Digital Tax (GDT) Flow in Kendraio App.

1. Contributors select the content hosts they wish to notify and click Submit.

2. The Flow simulates the process of creating a message and sending it out to the selected content hosts.

3. Once messages are sent, a green tick will appear in the ‘Notified’ column for each content host that has been notified.

4. When the content host receives a message, they will be able to confirm receipt via their interface. A green tick will then appear in the ‘Confirmation Received’ column of the contributor’s app.

5. Once the content host has actually verified compliance, a green tick will appear in the ‘Compliance Verified’ column.

Next steps

By building tools which enable contributors to make decisions and manage their content better, we want to begin a conversation about our future digital landscape. We want to distinguish human generated and artificially generated materials whilst also dealing with complicated rights and fiscal issues at a global level.

So far, our tool is simply a model of how contributors could communicate their GDT requirements to content hosts. GDT is still in its infancy but we hope these first steps will enable those involved in the creation of digital wealth to take responsibility for organising and taxing it. We would love to hear feedback from our network about what we’ve built, and what the most important aspects of GDT will be for creators. If you’re interested in this space, please get in touch!
