Mobius Motors
$6,000 Car Aims to Transform Africa’s Economy
During the 1980's kenya made an attempt of entering the automobile industry with the production of the first ever Kenyan car called ‘Nyayo car’. The project was initiated in 1986 by the president at the time Daniel Arap Moi. The nyayo car, designed by the university of nairobi, reached 120km/h however stopped production due to luck of funds. This left the automobile industry in Kenya primarly involved only in the the assembling, retail and distribution of motor vehicles. With 52.3% of all new kenyan cars are assembled in kenya. However the introduction of Mobius Motors early this year, this pocket friendly car aims to transform this industry.
A brand new Mobius car costs 950,000/= Kenyan Shillings. The companies vision is to create a car made for the african rough terrain. Many challenges that people in less developed areas face is maintaining a car in these regions when the car was made for good roads. The challenges that the automobile industry in kenya faces is the import of second hand cars from japan and the UAE rather than new ones due to the fact that Kenya is generally a low-income country. Never-the-less the creation of the low cost kenyan car threatens to solve this.
Mobius strives to build a platform for mobility. They plan to do this not only by providing a car that caters to anyone in the sub-sahara region but also with the financing and business advice needed to operate a sustainable transport business.
