In an effort to highlight the bourgeoning plastic menace, a Mumbai-based NGO will launch a massive plastic donation, collection and recycling drive on Oct. 2.

The initiative involving citizen groups, corporate institutions, housing societies, school- and college-goers, will see ProjectMumbai.org, which is leading the week-long Mumbai Plastic Recyclothon, turn plastic waste collected from residents into public benches and waste bins.

The group plans to recycle and reuse the collected plastic for creating a special art installations as well as making benches for senior citizens and waste bins. Sculptor Arzan Khambatta would create the art installation. Besides, the NGO, along with beach clean-up groups, has planned to launch plastic clean-up operations on Dadar, Mahim, Worli and Juhu on Oct. 2.

Shishir Joshi, the man behind the initiative told The Better India : “The Mumbai Plastic Recyclothon is not only about voluntary giving, but is a unique manner of contributing to the city’s well-being. The effort not only captures the spirit of the people of Mumbai but also becomes another opportunity for them to reclaim their city.”

Shishir who set up ProjectMumbai is also known for the spectacular initiative ‘Hamara Station Hamari Shaan’ where he co-led 25,000 Mumbaikars in 2016 to beautify 36 Railway stations in the city.

Better India notes that “a unique give-back gesture of the Recyclothon is to recycle a portion of the plastic and convert it into 100 benches to be placed in open spaces for senior citizens. Another chunk will be recycled for the creation of waste bins to be put up at key locations across the maximum city.”

Who can participate?

Schools, colleges, corporates, housing societies, businesses, any individual or groups of individuals can join the donation drive, which will run from October 2 to October 8.

Those wishing to donate plastic can register on www.projectmumbai.org before September 30 to avail free pick-up. Alternately, people can also deposit the plastic at drop off points designated by the civic body.
