Does Weather Affect the Spread of COVID-19?

A new kind of report was going around for some time, that the COVID-19 situation may worsen with the 3rd wave.

According to health experts, there will be more COVID-19 cases as the temperature falls.

Global experts believe that the weather could trigger a 3rd wave of the pandemic, and the situation might turn worse than the second one.

According to reports July may be extremely challenging this year.

Academy of Medical Sciences, UK has suggested that there might be a peak in the hospital admission and number of deaths in June/July 2021.

That might be of similar magnitude to that of the second wave.

Though there is no solid proof of how the virus might behave, early reports suggest that the virus may survive longer.

On the other hand, numerous researches suggest that hot or cold weather has no significant effect on the spread of COVID-19.

This means that whether it is a hot or cold climate, the transmission of COVID-19 entirely depends on our behaviour.

Even the World Health Organization has mentioned that the virus can be transmitted in any weather to justify this.

COVID-19 mainly spreads between people, and changes in weather like rain or snow might dilute traces of the virus from frequently touched surfaces or objects.

But it is believed that the transmission from surfaces is not the major contributor to spreading the virus.

Whether it is hot or cold, the spread of the virus can only be stopped if people stay indoors and avoid large public gatherings where the chances of transmission are higher.

Moreover, it has also been seen that the spread happens more in households where people share the same bathroom and kitchen.

In places with poor ventilation, you might get affected quickly, as the virus spreads through the air and the infectious particles remain suspended in the air for several hours.

The spread of the virus can only be related to weather because it’s not what the temperature does, but how it makes us behave.

Like in winter, people spend more time indoors together, with closed windows to stop the cold from getting inside, which makes the room ill-ventilated and thereby increases the chance of transmission.

So keep your windows open during the daytime to let airflow and improve ventilation.

Vaccination in Maharashtra

The process of vaccination has already begun; but with no clear results, we cannot totally rely on them. Though, Maharashtra State Health Minister Rajesh Tope said that Maharashtra can start mass vaccination of individuals between age group 18–45 this month.

So it is important that people plan on the basis of current resources.

Steps for prevention

You are already aware of all the necessary preventive measures, but still, we are reminding you once again.

Don’t forget to wash your hands often, with soap, for a minimum of 20 seconds.

Also, keep in mind that you should wash:

  • Before eating or preparing food
  • Before touching your face
  • After you use the restroom
  • After you leave a public place
  • After coughing, or sneezing
  • After handling your mask
  • After changing a diaper
  • After caring for someone sick
  • After touching animals or pets

Always Avoid Close Contact

Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

When you are outside your home, keep 6 feet of distance from others.

Wear a mask when you are outside.

Sanitization

  • You must remember to regularly sanitize frequently touched surfaces daily like tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks.

Always monitor your health.

Stay in well-ventilated rooms.

We should accept the fact that COVID-19 is going to stay with us for some time until mass vaccination is done. So till that time, we all should maintain the basic preventive measures issued by the World Health Organization to stay safe and keep our family safe.
