While other European countries have already incorporated the right of lesbians and single women for fertility treatment, France is just on the track. The biggest LGBTQ reform of President Macron is about to be debated in Parliament starting this Tuesday. The move made relatively slowly with conservatives harshly opposing but is considered inevitable after same-sex marriage was legalized 6 years ago under President Hollande. “We are going to advance in order to adapt our laws to our society as it is, here and now, and to the French people in their great diversity,” said Agnes Buzyn, Health Minister, introducing reform to MPs.

However, not all the politicians support the reform. “The state is going to lie to a child by saying that you are born from two mothers,” said Marine Le Pen, far-right opposition leader. “The state should not lie on a birth certificate… you can say that you are born from an unknown father,” she added. Moreover, the conservatives claim that for “mom-mom” families children will grow up fatherless that may potentially influence their mental health. The collection of “arguments” is truly huge but the final goal is unclear. Eventually, LGBTQ people do exist in France and as French citizens they have a fundamental right to enjoy basics granted to their fellow countrymen. However, the authors of reform are not that aggressive as conservatives and they do care about diversity and inclusion. That is why it is proposed for children to know the name of their biological father upon request starting from the age of 18. It is high time for France to adjust its legislation to realms, isn’t it?
