Netflix has agreed to provide third parties with their viewing data. After U.K. policymakers pressured streaming services in their country to reveal these numbers — Netflix, for the first time ever, has agreed to abide by the same rules as broadcasters.

The BARB (Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board) already gives monthly stats on broadcasting services and some streaming services like Disney+, but the addition of Netflix’s audience data is sure to provide deep insight into how the two industries compare.

Losing around 1 million viewers in Q2, Netflix has been finding new ways to retain and attract viewers. Besides cheaper Ad Plans (to be launched live in November,) they have continued to create original content — but sometimes at very high costs.

Not all originals were as successful as Netflix had hoped — perhaps due to poor insight into what viewers really wished to see. With BARB now able to disclose monthly statistics on viewer data, investors, competitors, and Netflix viewers will now be able to see just how well (or not so well) these contents do in the market.
