He Picked You

August 31 — John 15:9–17

“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit — fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.” (John 15:16)

Twenty years ago, they held an auction of Jackie Kennedy Onassis’ Estate. It was expected to bring a total of five million dollars — still a lot of money but even more so then! However, in the first night alone, they raised an astounding $4.5 million! A worn footstool went for $33,350. A silver tape measure sold for $48,875. A walnut tobacco humidor that had belonged to John F. Kennedy brought an amazing $574,500! Many of the items auctioned were common, everyday items, but they became valuable because of who they belonged to.

Would it surprise you to learn that the same is true of you and me? We are valuable because of Who we belong to. In John 15:16, Jesus reminded his disciples, “You did not choose Me, but I chose you.” If you are a disciple of Jesus Christ, the same is true today.

We are also reminded in I Corinthians 6:19–20 that “your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own. For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” The price that was paid for you and me was the very lifeblood of Jesus. We may sometimes say to people close to us that we would give our very lives for them. Well, Jesus did just that! He considered us that valuable and — don’t forget — He chose us!

So, when you begin to beat yourself up because of feelings of guilt, shame or worthlessness, remember… Jesus loves you and He chose you. He has already paid the price for your sins and all He wants you to do is to confess your sins to Him and repent of them — turn away from doing them again! Then, get back to following the One who values you so highly!
