You’re Invited

August 7 — 2 Chronicles 30:1–13

Hezekiah sent word to all Israel and Judah and also wrote letters to Ephraim and Manasseh, inviting them to come to the temple of the LORD in Jerusalem and celebrate the Passover to the LORD, the God of Israel. (2 Chronicles 30:1)

In 2 Chronicles 29, we see a people turn back to God and rediscover the joy of serving and worshipping Him. In the final verse of the chapter we read, “Hezekiah and all the people rejoiced at what God had brought about for his people, because it was done so quickly.” They were amazed at the fast turnaround of events. The Temple had been repaired, the hearts of the people changed, and God seemed to bless the nation once again.

What is the natural response when we experience something truly amazing? Don’t we just naturally want to tell others about it and share the good news? That is what Hezekiah does in 2 Chronicles 30. In fact, he invites Israel and Judah and all the surrounding people to join them in a great celebration. Interestingly, he invites them to come and celebrate the Passover, even though it is not the traditional time to celebrate the Passover. It would be like us inviting others to come and celebrate Easter with us in November! But, the joy they experienced was so overwhelming that Hezekiah couldn’t wait to share!

It is also interesting to note how the invitation was received or, in some cases, not received. In 2 Chronicles 30:10–11, we read

The couriers went from town to town in Ephraim and Manasseh, as far as Zebulun, but the people scorned and ridiculed them. Nevertheless, some men of Asher, Manasseh and Zebulun humbled themselves and went to Jerusalem.

When we have been amazed by God, it is hard for us to fathom how anyone could refuse to “join in” and not want to experience what we have experienced. Yet, as we read here, only some seem to respond to the invitation. But, for those that do, 2 Chronicles 30:12 tells us that “the hand of God was on the people to give them unity of mind to carry out what the king and his officials had ordered, following the word of the LORD.”

So, with the “temple” repaired and the heart fully dedicated, you have entered into worship. Now, seeing what God has done and anticipating what He is going to do, it is time to extend the invitation. Who do you know that you can invite to join you in worship — to experience the presence of God and see what He is doing? Why not call and invite them today.
