Hiatus Kaiyote’s “Molasses”, a stand out track off their second album, Choose your weapon, is the kind of song that gets me excited before the end of my first listen. It’s in part due to the fact that the production is so clean and smooth. In part, because the band is so exciting, it keeps everything fresh and far from boring. They beautifully capture a late 90’s - early 2000's hip-hop/R&B, neo-soul vibe. Yet, somehow still sound very current and never dated. And while at this point they are still a new up and coming band trying to find their audience, they have already caught the attention of a few major players from pop music's past and present.

Avey Tare of Animal Collective, heard Hiatus Kaiyote on the radio while driving down the road.

He liked them enough to play them for Angel Deradoorian of The Dirty Projectors, who likes them enough to play them for ?uestlove of The Roots.

The Roots in turn play them for Erykah Badu, who, when meeting Nai Palm, the lead singer of Hiatus Kaiyote, walks up to Nai singing one of Nai’s songs to the young front woman.

Hiatus Kaiyot have already gotten the attention of some major players in the music world. Their sound is relaxed enough to be welcoming to newcomers but exciting enough to keep you wanting more. Q-Tip has remixed a song of theirs, “Kakamarra” and even Prince, liked them enough to tweet them to his followers. Its time now for the young band to become a household name of their own.

Listen to the song “Molasses” below.
