So I ripped this song off YouTube as an Mp3 and I’ve had it on repeat for like the last 3 hours. I’ve been trying to figure out what makes me want to keep this same tune on a constant cycle. There’s no single answer but I have come to one conclusion: That there’s a certain droning melancholic ache that feels completely original and unique to everybody. Everyone can relate to some sort of longing feeling that dwells under all the layers of life. The structure of this song definitely embodies that feeling. Kevin Parker of Tame Impala once worded this feeling pretty well in a Reddit AMA:

“When you hear a happy chord you know it’s a major, and when you hear a sad chord you know it’s minor. those kind of things… But it just makes you search for NEW mysteries. NEW things to wow and confuse you… ways of making a major chord sound sad, and vice versa. making it sound like something else all together.”

Making a sad chord happy and a happy chord sad, that’s where Melancholy tones can be found and it’s in these tones where songs begin to feel more realistic, more relatable and also more introspective and personal. Cause life isn’t happy or sad, it’s both, all the time. The arrangement of this song pulls you in as an individual. It brings the listener into an introspective space where they can experience realistic feelings. Music can be so many things and portray an array of different emotions but when you come across songs that evoke realness then there is something to be said for that. Well Well Well are well on their way to be able to sit at that end of the musical playing field. Take a look at this live recording they did with Sofar Sounds. Shit’s my all day jam today.
