Kick&Backpack — Like bragging right, like travel rite

The fine line between fanaticism and wanderlust

Bragging rights are like a traveller’s rite of passage. A new episode unfolds every time you go about it. It may be somewhat of a fairytale told with the melodramatic highs and lows or an unflinching melancholy that tears at the heartstrings of one person while it excites another person.

It is the satisfaction after a sequence of difficult tasks carried out to the letter which is then crowned with success. Every inch of ground you gain against your competition radiates confidence in the face and raises the bar. As fate will have it, football fans are no better than itchy feet living out of a backpack or a mobile app wanting to have an experience.

Where rivals anticipate the performance of each other’s team before celebrating their upper hand (I mean the bragging rights), the wanderer is out to celebrate the conquest of each item on a lifeless bucket list. To live their dream before they die.

Do you know what a traveller’s rite of passage feels like? The curiosity that grows with a calm voice at the airport telling you to “watch your bags” or “don’t park in the disabled zone”. You take an overnight bus instead of catching a flight because it’s eco-friendly. You find yourself deep in the middle of vociferous home support at Stretford End eventually leaving the Manchester United stadium a different person. The hours spent sightseeing in the majestic city of Amsterdam with a transit visa.

If you’ve spent time packing and unpacking for a journey, there’s a fair chance you know how the traveller’s rite of passage feels. If you are a game fanatic like most young men and women of this generation, there’s a sporting chance you’re a fan of IRS streaming or ASMR and you’re aware of your bragging rights.
