Today we have made this fun and bright rainbow artwork made out of coloured rice and cotton balls. This is a great activity for brightening up your day especially on a cold rainy day!

This is one of those simple, gorgeous rainbow crafts that is so easy to do, you wonder why you haven't done it before. The kids will love it, and the basic tools; rice, a bag, and a few cotton balls, shouldn't be hard to find either. It is a wonderful sensory activity too thanks to the coloured rice.

This activity is great for children to learn their colours as well as being a fun sensory activity as they make the coloured rice.

To make this you’ll need:

  • Paper
  • Pen
  • Rice
  • Coloured paint
  • Zip lock bags
  • Glue, and
  • Cotton balls

The actual activity is really easy to set up with your kids too:

  1. You will need to draw a picture of rainbow with clouds on either side. It doesn’t need to be perfect as this will just provide the outline of where you will put the coloured rice. You could even get your children to draw one, depending on how confident you feel about how they can manage it, of course.
  2. Time to make some coloured rice. All you need to do here, is add a couple of tablespoons of rice into a zip lock bag and then add a drop of coloured paint. Close the bag and now have fun squishing the rice into the paint (your kids will absolutely love doing this!) You’ll now have coloured rice!
  3. Repeat this activity with all the different colours of the rainbow, it might take a little time to do this, but the sensory activity with the zip lock bags is a lot of fun for your kids. Do make sure you do it somewhere where if you do get a bit carried away, and the bags break, carnage won’t occur 😜
  4. Add glue to the first section of the rainbow and your child can sprinkle the first colour onto it either using their fingers or a spoon.
  5. Shake off the excess rice, and repeat this step with each different colour until you have your rainbow complete, and
  6. Finally, add some glue to the clouds and stick on the cotton balls and you have finished!

Now you can step back and admire your masterpiece as well.

This rainbow craft is lovely to do with the kids - something special for a rainy day, when perhaps there is a rainbow outside - or just any day!

We hope you enjoyed making this rainbow rice artwork today, do remember to check out the other great craft and printables activities that we have on the site including:

There are loads of other wonderful Rainbow craft ideas on other sites as well, so why not check some of these out too?

Plenty of fun to be had with a rainbow — right? Why not have a play with these, and make sure to gently point the next one out to your children when you see one. Though be careful not to point directly at it — my mum always told me that was bad luck. Goodness knows if that’s actually true though! 😉

If you are looking for more fun activities, do follow our Pinterest account as well. We have lots of great pins there from this site and beyond, on lots of different craft areas. Something for everyone.

Have fun!
