Bullish on the Bear: Dubit’s “Masha and the Bear” Games Top Charts
Leeds-based digital studio Dubit opened 2018 with a hit on its hands — its mini-games iPad app based on the global hit “Masha and the Bear” was December’s #1 paid entertainment app and the #2 paid children’s app. It made Apple’s “New Apps we Love” and “Hot This Week” features in the US, UK and Canada, and Google promoted the game in 80 countries. Dubit landed the collaboration with Animaccord Animation at the 2017 Kidscreen Summit.
The four games evolved from research into favorite video Masha moments. For example, “Stuff Your Face” is modeled on “Recipe for Disaster,” YouTube’s most-watched animation with 2.6 billion views. Like the stories, the games maintain appeal when played over and over.
Three of the games invite simultaneous co-play — no fighting over turns! All four have mechanics simple enough for Masha’s youngest fans and challenging enough for the teens and adults who also love the comedy.
“It’s been enormous fun to develop games around stories with the worldwide appeal of ’Masha and the Bear,’” said Dubit’s Sean Thompson. “We’re all fans of the characters, and Dubit loves reimagining classic game patterns, so we had a great time playing with ideas that fit Bear’s endless tolerance and Masha’s endless energy. The quick popularity of the app tells us that we hit our mark with the humor and action.”
Animaccord Animation says, “As we pay a lot of attention to development and fulfilling of digital strategy, every application which is officially released under “Masha and the Bear” brand, is, first of all, of very high quality, and, second of all, each game has not only entertaining, but also high educational value. That’s why we are very happy with our collaboration with Dubit, one of the leading companies in the application and games industry, which, at the same time, shares our family values. We are planning to continue our successful collaboration and to surprise fans of Masha and the Bear brand with the new joint projects.”
Dubit is a Leeds-based digital studio and research and strategy consultancy, focused exclusively on children and youth since 1999.
