Jonathan Joy writes this collection of thrilling, short sci-fi stories (often with the help of his son) for the Ashland Beacon newspaper in Eastern Kentucky.
The show revolves around a mysterious West Virginia town that is home to kid superheroes, kid astronauts, time-traveling teens, kids that can quantum leap into video games, and much more bizarre activity.
Mostly for younger listeners from all over the country (age 5–12), the show is popular for families that like to listen together. It’s a fantastic resource for your screentime-avoiding toolkits, and elementary school teachers share the podcast with their students as well.
Our podcast is first and foremost a family affair. It is something fun my son and I can do together. We have had a few sponsors, though we don’t do this primarily for money. Just for fun. It’s also a cool way to preserve our voices and our stories, especially since there are little bits and pieces of autobiographical work in there. — Jonathan Joy
First released in September 2018, the Joy family turned to podcasting as a good way to preserve their stories that had been printed in the paper. They’ve been delighted to expand into the storytelling medium and to have grown their audience beyond their hometown. They usually publish three episodes a month, and the average episode is only about ten or eleven minutes long. The stories are great for quick trips in the car, entertainment while fixing meals, or for story-bingers.
