I am very excited to be showcasing one of my son’s “absolute most favorite podcasts, ever!” Stories for Wonderful Children is filled with fun, sweet characters going on adventures that are never too scary, but also always have enough at stake to be very engaging and clever. The stories feature characters that model kindness, empathy, and problem-solving. And, we love hearing Dan’s children, to whom he is telling these stories at bedtime, pipe up with questions and comments throughout the stories.

For the past eighteen years, from the time his oldest child was two until his youngest turned thirteen this past year, Dan Wendelin told his children a new bedtime story every night, making it up as he went along. The stories were shaped by their requests, questions, and running commentary. From 2007 to 2012, they recorded those stories on a digital dictaphone. They burned their favorites to CD so that they could listen to them repeatedly. Over time, other young relatives would hear them and request their own copies of the CDs.

Dan’s family encouraged him to turn the fun, imaginative stories into a podcast or books. And, although he’s a busy physician and father of three, he made time during the early days of the pandemic lockdown to learn how to edit, create, produce, and publish this high-quality show for kids and their families. The show premiered on August 22, 2020, and this summer he’s surpassed 100 episodes!

Dan created a special episode for our Kids Listen Activity Podcast, and he also went the extra mile to create videos to demonstrate and guide listeners in making Origami creations.

“Akuro is a boy who longs for friends but struggles with shyness. When he learns of the Japanese legend of 1,000 origami cranes, he believes that he has found a way to fulfill that wish.”
