How often do kids listen to podcasts? Will kids watch podcasts on YouTube? And are podcasts really the most trusted medium for families? Those are a few of the questions answered in our third survey of the kids and family podcast audience, called “Kids Podcasts in the Age of Screens.”

Kids Listen is a non-profit organization that advocates for high-quality podcasts for kids. We conduct research on kids’ podcast listening habits, filling a gap in the research on podcast audiences. Listeners under the age of 12 are not often included in traditional podcast research, and as a result, they have not been well understood and chronically underserved. However, Kids Listen research has established that this audience is unique in their commitment to their favorite shows, and is an incredibly valuable audience not to be ignored.

“Kids’ Podcasts in the Age of Screens” builds on two Kids Listen previous surveys. Our Inaugural Survey, completed in 2017, proved that children are deeply engaged in podcast listening, and keen to take action after listening. Additionally, we found that co-listening was very common among families. The second survey, “Understanding the Kids & Family Audience,” published in 2021, strengthened these findings by discovering high levels of engagement, routine listening, and advertising preferences. Additionally, this survey featured demographic breakdowns that allow for a more refined understanding of kids and family audiences.

In our third survey, released today, we look beyond our well-established findings to understand kids’ podcast listening within the landscape of children’s media, after the pandemic. Kids have an endless supply of media at their fingertips — much of it on screens. How does an audio-based medium fit into their media consumption? The findings have implications for kids’ podcast creators, advertisers, and anyone interested in exploring the medium.

Here’s a few of our top-line findings from the survey:

Kids who listen to podcasts listen often. Chart shows that 91% of kids listen to podcasts at least once a week. Nearly half of kid listeners (48%) tune in on a daily basis. Kids Listen logo.
Kids are heavy listeners of podcast content.
Kids’ podcasts are the most trusted media for recommendations. Bar graph shows that 75% of parents gave their favorite kids’ podcast the highest rating of trustworthiness, compared to these other sources: Parenting/family bloggers, magazines for kids, parenting/family social influences and favorite kids’ TV show.
Kid podcast hosts have established trust with their audience.
Room to grow. A person holds an iPad showing bar graph. Only 8% reported using YouTube to listen to kids podcasts, compared to 58% of adults listening on YouTube. Source from Voices.com on adult listening.
