Girl Tales and Dorktales Storytime podcasts teamed up to bring this one-of-a-kind narrative to the airwaves just in time for Autism Acceptance Month. The result of their collaboration, “Owen and the Order of the Ancient Cedar,” isn’t your typical fairytale; it’s a delightful blend of neurodiversity and feminist empowerment, designed to spark curiosity and inspire young hearts. The all-autistic cast brings an authenticity to the narrative and aligns with both podcasts’ mission of genuine representation.
In an interview for Read Your World, executive producer Chad Chenail and scriptwriter Molly Murphy, reveal the podcasts’ collective mission and how the project came together. Answering the question about what he hopes the impact will be on young listeners after they hear the story, Chad replied:
I hope listeners will feel empowered to find their own path towards community and the things that they love. I hope it inspires kids to be generous and kind in the face of obstacles they might find along their path. And I hope listeners who are on the autism spectrum hear someone like them who is magical, brave, kind, and determined. I hope it can be another small example in our listeners’ lives that the call to adventure is everywhere, and that it’s for everyone.

“Redge’s K.N.I.G.H.T. School”
You’ll typically find Dorktales’ lovable hedgehog, Redge, off on a storytelling adventure with his best human friend, Jonathan. But he also runs a heroic training institution called Redge’s K.N.I.G.H.T. School where he teaches young Hedge Knights-in-training about courage, self-discovery, and celebrating everyone as they are. One of his students, Archie, expresses doubts that he’ll ever be able to live up to the Hedge Pledge of Heroism. Redge helps him realize that he already possesses his own unique strengths and gifts worthy of knighthood.
Dorktales incorporates empowering messages and lessons into every story. It’s important for all kids to hear, but even more so for those who are being marginalized and misunderstood. What makes this episode special is that both voice actors are on the autism spectrum — one is a seasoned professional and the other is just beginning his acting career.
