Being able to pitch is a way to present your organic idea to an audience in your own unique way. In writing, there are many essential keys to make sure you are including in each of your pitches to ensure success. When you are able to include all of the ways you can write a good pitch, you will not only benefit yourself but the ideas behind your pitches as well.

To begin, it is crucial to remember that pitches should have more than one sentence in total. A lot of people often think “short and sweet.” However, when writing a pitch, it is just the opposite. One sentence just isn’t enough to expand on your idea of what you really want. In a pitch, it is important to display your own style of writing as well as tone. Although, you shouldn’t write too much either. A good rule of thumb is to aim for two to three paragraphs which gives just enough insight for the editor to be able to craft an article from your ideas.

To expand on what to include, you want the reader to know who you are and show experience in your writing. Especially for first-timers, we want to know what type of work you are able to create and see what you are made of. Adding previous publications is always a good idea but remember to not send your resume! Showcase written works that elaborate your writing style and the topics you cover best. If you are just starting a writing career and have nothing to show, a good draft will be good enough. We all start somewhere so being able to show just a little of what you are capable of will work.

Another tip to keep in mind is to thoroughly read through the guidelines for your final submission. These guidelines will show exactly what expectations you must meet for that given publication. They also help you prepare for what you should be including in your pitch. Writing a good pitch will include all of the guidelines that fit within your genre of writing. Be sure to do this ahead of time to save yourself from making any mistakes.

Your ultimate goal is to make the best first impression you possibly can. Being able to grab the editor’s attention from the start is what will make you stand out against others. Editors are constantly seeking those writers who utilize their outside resources to make a well-researched pitch.

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again.

— William Edward Hickson

Remember, writing takes time, diligence, and practice. Editors are constantly seeking good pitches and being able to fail a few times may help you build your writing style up to be able to reach your ultimate goal.
