Update October, 2023: It’s now possible to link your web3name in the Nova Wallet to addresses across the Polkadot ecosystem, Ethereum, Bitcoin, Polygon and more, using w3ndi, provided by Apillon.

web3name has a new utility — it can now be used to send and receive funds in your Nova wallet! Addresses may now be linked to the web3name via GitHub, and an easy-to-use linking interface is on the way.

A web3name is a unique, easily-readable name you create to represent your decentralized identifier (DID) — your standardized digital fingerprint, the core of your digital identity.

Now web3name has a new utility — you can transfer funds directly via your web3name to linked addresses in Nova.

Nova Integration

When you click “Send” in your Nova wallet, you will now see the option of entering a receiving address or web3name (w3n).

If the web3name entered is linked to an address via the Nova mechanism, it will be visible underneath the name.

Clicking on the address shows more details.

Several addresses across the Polkadot and Ethereum ecosystems may be linked to one web3name, giving the sender the option of choosing which address to send to.

Linking Addresses

web3name already provides ways to publicly link credentials and addresses you control to your core identity, adding an extra layer of verification.

With this new function you can build your digital identity even further. Accounts are linked publicly, providing an easy way for payment and tips across Polkadot, Ethereum and EVM-based chains.

Note, the payment linking system is currently different to the pre-existing mechanism of linking accounts, so users who already have linked accounts will need to follow an additional set-up process.

For now, the more technically minded can link payment addresses to their web3name on GitHub by following the instructions from Nova here.

And thanks to one of our Polkadot ecosystem partners, a more user-friendly alternative linking method is in the works. Stay tuned!
