What’s the difference between documentaries on TV and on Youtube?

Documentaries on TV have stricter guidelines which is why some social issues are prohibited to air. It’s opposite on Youtube, most channels producing documentaries tend showcase braver topics like diving into the ‘taboo’ topics in the society. Content creators on Youtube have more liberty on picking the topics, and are braver in exposing sensitive issues.

I remember the first time I saw this documentary, I was scrolling the web about the shared borders of different countries until I found a topic about Pakistan and India, then leads me to this video.

This was an episode of Vice on HBO that tackles on the story of North Korean girl, Kim, who’s trying to escape from her country, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) , for better life, on the side note, the video features the long conflict between India and Pakistan in Kashmir.

The first part of this episode explicitly shows the hardship of Kim who just escaped her country, North Korea, to travel to the borders of China. Escaping from North Korea wasn’t that easy because if anyone tries to escape the country and get caught he or she will be put to concentration camps, or get killed. Vice News followed the trails of Kim after her unimaginable escape from North Korea then using China as a gateway to her escape. But upon reaching China, her journey doesn’t stop there , she has to go all the way Southeast in Laos then cross the river of the Mekong to Thailand to find refuge. From Thailand, Vice followed her and there it will unveil her fate as she will be helped by her fellow North Korean.

The second part was about the fiery political conflict between India and Pakistan in the Kashmir, where also the borders of two countries meet. Kashmir was described as one of the most dangerous places on earth as violence there are unimaginable at the same time there’s a pressure between the two countries in that place. Pakistan and India’s conflict in Kashmir was described as very dangerous that if that conflict completely ignites it might annihilate the humankind with the hundreds and thousands of nuclear arsenals these countries have. It will also takes us back through the history on why this conflict flared up.

Sorry to kill your excitement as the link had been taken down.

The video simply discussed euthanasia as it is now becoming legal and becoming a right to some parts of the world. Euthanasia helps individual to die and end their suffering from life. The Right to Die documentary follows individuals who were seeking euthanasia as an answer from their suffering from incurable diseases such as Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS. Also, it follows a woman who was set to be euthanized as she experienced a serious mental disorder. Vice News contrasted opinions from different perspectives from those people who needs the legality of euthanasia because of their health conditions to the opinions of the catholic church who opposed the legalization of euthanasia. What I like about this documentary was it went deep on the trails of the euthanization of a woman who demanded to be euthanized because of her mental health disorder. Vice caught everything from the arrival of the doctor and nurse, family members and friends in her house to the administration of the medicine to help her die and while those people who surrounded her bids their farewells.

Abortion is a sin in a place like the Philippines .

A half Filipino correspondent of Vice went to The Philippines — a predominantly catholic country in Asia — and talked about a taboo topic, a very sensitive topic, abortion. She went back to her native country and asked around about their opinions on abortion.

The documentary unfolds women’s experiences of being pregnant at a young age. Teenage men were also asked about being a baby daddy. The narrator also tries to find out teenage men’s worldview on sex. The ironies in the film fascinate me, especially the scene where they went undercover to buy abortifacient pills in the black market which is located in front of the famed Quiapo Church. The documentary provides a vivid process of abortion.

It featured a Catholic woman seeking help to a hilot to abort her baby. Vice’s The Backstreet Abortion documentary is one of the most disturbing documentaries I’ve ever seen. Everything is on tape, and this one issue, which is one of the world’s health crisis, needs a world attention.
