Who we are

KIN is all about Digital Innovation. We are fascinated by the ways in which the use and development of digital innovations affect the way we work and organize. We do this by looking beyond hypes and by actively engaging with professionals who are managing, developing and using these new technologies in organizations. We are part of the School of Business and Economics (SBE) at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU).

Our mission is to help organisations become digital-ready in a responsible way. We bring together academia and practice to truly understand the social and long-term consequences of digital innovations in organizations.

We are a multi-disciplinary group of researchers with academic backgrounds in business administration, sociology, communication science, anthropology, philosophy, engineering, industrial design, and computer science. There are few, if any, places in the world where state-of-the-art expertise is developed that encompasses the whole field of Digital Innovation ranging from the development of smart technologies in ecosystems, to changing work practices influenced by Artificial Intelligence (AI), to crowdsourcing through online platforms to the changing role of the IT organization.

What we do

Typical to KIN is our embedded research approach. Our researchers are “embedded” in the organisations they study for long periods of time. This allows us to reveal often unintended or unexpected developments over time while ensuring impactful collaboration with our industry partners.

Next to our research, we build a business network, provide executive education, and host masterclasses on a variety of topics such as data & analytics, the impact of AI on work, innovation processes, crowdsourcing, and much more. Our activities include:

  • KIN Business Network — We help our network members to continuously strengthen their employees’ knowledge with the latest academic insights, to look beyond hypes, to recruit digital talent and to learn from other companies facing similar challenges in the digital landscape.
  • KIN Executive Education — In our 14 day program, “Digital Innovation and Transformation,” we help you navigate the digital landscape and make better decisions to create value through digital innovation for your organization.
  • KINTalks — A series of seminars institutionalizing our engagement with industry, during which managers, entrepreneurs, and policy makers discuss novel ideas around organizing for digital innovation.
  • AI@Work Conference (March 5th-6th) — a multi-stakeholder conference fostering discussions around the impact of AI and the future of work in an international setting. The conference brings diverse audiences together, from academics and business leaders to policy makers and journalists.
