kin2kin, the family app developed in Wanaka, New Zealand has experienced huge growth since being released early last year. Founder Hamish McGregor says this is partly due to wonderful support from the Wanaka community.

‘In addition to this home town support we’ve been thrilled to have had coverage by both national and international media that has helped us reach over 10,000 users from over 50 countries.’

TVNZ’s Breakfast show led with the headline of kin2kin ‘taking on’ Facebook, yet McGregor said quite the opposite was true. ‘kin2kin is a complementary tool that simply allows families to stay in touch in a private setting, where shared photos are organised, and family can respond directly to the person tagged in the photo.’

What makes kin2kin different for families?

Recently kin2kin filmed local users of the app for a video series. McGregor was ‘heartened’ to hear stories from families who found the app had real benefits for them; strengthening the bond between grandparents and grandkids, stirring competition amongst cousins who would normally only see each other a couple of times a year, and helping godparents remain close to godchildren who they couldn’t see often due to distance.

Proud to be able to call Wanaka home, and take the app global from there, McGregor says the team has been working hard to make the app an invaluable tool for connecting family across distance, time zones and complex relationships.

Since starting as a simple and secure platform to share photos privately with family, the app has evolved to include video sharing, birthday calendars, and albums, with more features in development that will make family gifting a breeze.

McGregor is grateful for the patience of Wanaka locals who started using the app back in the early days and have stayed loyal while the kin2kin experience was constantly refined and improved to be a simple solution for complex families.

McGregor and the kin2kin team wanted a way of thanking the community for their support and have offered locals exclusive bonus features, such as longer video and priority help for grandparents, that are not available on the app stores.
