On Tuesday, June 20, Kik founder and CEO Ted Livingston spoke with Jon Russell, a reporter at TechCrunch, at TechCrunch Shenzhen. The two discussed a wide range of topics, including Kik’s relationship with Tencent (the maker of WeChat and an investor in Kik), the future of chat in the West, and of course, Kin.

Livingston shared the story of Kik’s early interest in cryptocurrency and talked about the company’s long-term vision to build a broader ecosystem of digital services that would all use Kin. Livingston and Russell also explored the idea of turning Kik into an economy and monetizing a community by bringing people together to provide value to each other through a cryptocurrency. Check out the video for the full fireside.
