Kind storytelling from nonfiction to graphic memoir and children’s books.

Books for the young (and young at heart)

Horton Hears A Who!
(by Dr. Seuss)

This classic for all ages is a delightful way to show that kindness transcends difference, and that listening to others and amplifying their voices is a powerful act.

Wonder
(by R.J. Palacio)

This beautiful book follows the journey when a young boy with some facial disfigurement begins school. We get to experience various characters and their attitudes and beliefs through their own lens — a powerful tool for teaching empathy.

You’ll not only fall in love with Auggie, the main character, but be challenged in loving all the characters, even those who are mean.

Books that help us cultivate empathy

The Best We Could Do
(by Thi Bui)

Bui’s family immigrated to the US from Vietnam in the 1970's.This beautiful illustrated memoir reflects on what home means when you’ve had to flee your homeland because of war.

The Age of Empathy
(by Frans De Waal)

Think we’re all selfish? Think again. In this important book by a prominent scientist, we learn that a great variety of animals show compassion, and that a kinder, fairer society is possible.

Books for those seeking hope

I Am Malala
(by Malala Yousafzai)

As a 15 year-old, Malala put her life on the line to fight for education for girls in Pakistan — and almost didn’t survive.

This incredible memoir is as hopeful as it is fierce. When practicing kindness to others is risky and challenging, we can draw from the courage and example of Malala to take that first step.

the power of kindness
(by Piero Ferrucci)

This book explores nearly every facet of life and how it intersects with kindness.

Almost like vignettes, each chapter will unpack how the power of kindness is needed for things like forgiveness, love and generosity.
