It’s international stress awareness week! And although my younger self would say something along the lines of “don’t worry, a great decision is usually made non-rationally”, when I’m caring for a team of people with different personalities I must consider and try to understand what they are experiencing, both at work and at home.

Life can get exceptionally stressful for everyone — right now being a perfect example, with the cost of living crisis, political affairs, climate change and the Ukraine war, just to name a few.

These are extremely overwhelming events and it’s hard not to be impacted. Stress not only affects our health, but also relationships and interactions with other people around us including the ability to function and do our jobs.

With this in mind, stress can impact our workplace, affect our businesses and organisations, and ultimately the economy in general.

Here are a few tips to help you in these challenging times:

🐞 List your stressors

Why not try making a list of the things in your life that make you feel overly anxious, worried, or under too much pressure? When you’ve made this list, try to identify those stressors that you are in a position to change. Then, make a plan of action! This will help you feel more in control.

🧠 Avoid unhealthy stress relievers

Can you identify any unhealthy stress relievers in your life that you could live without? Things we reach for when we are feeling stressed because they make us feel better — caffeine, smoking, sugary foods, or perhaps shopping, gambling, or even spending too much time on social media.

🧘🏻 Think gratitude and mindfulness!

Make the effort to look for and focus on the positives in your day and be thankful for them, however small. Practice mindfulness to help you stay calm, and take your mind away from worries. There are great tools and content available online to learn more about mindfulness if you feel like you need some help getting started.

🌟 Lastly, the word STAN:

S — spend time with people that makes you feel good about yourself

T — Talk about your feelings, if you’re struggling always talk to somebody

A — Ask for help

N — It’s ok to say no. Don’t feel that you have to do everything that people ask you to do

Whether you are going through a stressful time at work or personally, or if you’re trying to help someone who is, I hope you can find these tips helpful and remember them for future.
