How to Catch Students Who Use ChatGPT to Write Their Essays

This was generated in a matter of seconds by Chat GPT

As a college writing tutor and as a person who has directly researched the problem of college cheating, I am always concerned when there is something that can take away the chance for college students to build the skills they will need to survive in the world.

I knew this was coming, with the advances we have been making in AI technology, but now that it is here, this is very concerning.

While it may not be news to professors that this program exists, it may leave many wondering what one could do to prevent cheating from this sort of technology.

I wanted to see for myself what ChatGPT can do. The results were terrifying (and I’m not the only one who feels that way), but there is still hope.

What Is ChatGPT?

Chat GPT is an Open AI project that responds to questions. As Open AI states, “ChatGPT is a sibling model to InstructGPT, which is trained to follow an instruction in a prompt and provide a detailed response.”

What this means for students is that a student can plug in a professor’s writing prompt and then receive a detailed answer to the question. Bam! Seventy percent of the work is done in a matter of seconds.
