Begari Laxmi from Nawabpet , Vikarabad district was generously picking cotton from the field alone. We stopped by and checked if she had voted she said yes yes, early in the day and she is back to the field picking cotton.

Behind her gentle smile was a sad story which has now become a regular affair in Telangana rural lives.

Begari Laxmi’s husband expired a few years ago and the whole burden is on her to run the family. She has 4 children,. 2 daughters and 2 sons. 1 daughter married and 1 daughter and son studying and one son helping her.

The land of 5 acres they own after her husband’s death has not yet been transferred to her name and she and her son have tried their best to get it changed but it hasn’t yet happened.

Because of this they are unable to avail any of the benefits of a farmer from Govt. Including Rythu Bandhu(₹40,000 per year in their case).

Due to almost no rains in the area the crop output has dropped significantly and the debt is looking upon her.

Inspite of all this hardship she went and voted but when we checked with her why she voted to so & so, she said a few young people like you said about some of the benefits they would get and she went with the crowd.

On the contrary in regular life she is trying hard to make ends meet and majority of the reason would be failed governance to transfer the land from her dead husband’s name to her. It’s the basic responsibility of revenue officials to do so.

Kisan Mitra Helpline team would follow up the issue with revenue officials and try help her with it.
