Week 7of the “12 Crafts in 12 Weeks” at OrangeScape brought to us Quilling — an art form that apparently was the craze a few years back. I had no idea! To my naive mind this seemed like a cross between stitching and origami. I couldn’t imagine how people could make such beautiful products out of essentially just coloured paper.
We had Meera, an Interior Designer by profession, with a talent for the art form help us get started on quilling. The instructions seemed very simple (rolling the paper around the needle, pressing the edges) and I didn’t see how this would lead to the design that was shown to us. But slowly with the slightly different tweaks to her instructions we could all see the flower buds, leaves (small and big) emerge. Finally when we got to gluing it on our boards, we had something quite beautiful to call our own.
As we cross the half way mark in our series on crafts, I realize a little bit more about the benefits from what seems to be an unrelated activity. The most recent one is that lack of learning in most cases can be overcome in just 45 minutes provided you are hands on (not lectured to or listening / watching on YouTube alone).
