Mango Sticky Rice
free verse poetry
At first, it’s a surprise
You may be unwilling to try,
Not to try for a long time.
It’s just weird!
Mango sticky rice with coconut milk.
Mango. Sticky rice. With coconut. Milk.
Are you sure???
Mango ice cream, yes
Mango with ice cream, yes.
Mango in fruit cocktail, yes.
Mango by itself… Yes!
Sticky rice with grilled chicken, yes.
Sticky rice with grilled pork, yes.
Sticky rice with grilled fish yes.
Sticky rice by itself… Not really.
Well you know, I will give it a go,
Feck it I’ve tried deep fried locust.
A little bit of mango,
Mix the sticky rice with coconut milk
With much trepidation,
And, into the mouth, it goes.
Here comes the weird taste and texture
Of a combination which someone
With a sick sense of humour threw together.
Oh, What! Oh, jazuz, this is amazing!
What a mixture. This is genius!
The coconut milk-soaked sticky rice
Compliments the soft sweet mango,
So too the soft sweet mango compliments
The coconut soaked sticky rice.
The textures are a delightful balance
Leaving you begging for more.
What a brilliant combination!
What wonderful person threw this together!?
Your mouth and senses filled with flavour explosions
Leaves you hanging for more.
Only you probably ate dinner first and are in danger
Of inducing a food coma.
You can keep your durian’s,
The mango sticky rice is mine!
