My kitchen production revolves around my wife and daughter; one is a pain (gluten-free), and the other is picky (teenager), but a good cook must soldier on.
The other evening, as I watched my daughter, a formerly adventurous eater, moving her fork around a plate of pork Marsala, potato gratin, and fresh beets, my frustration on having her eat well bubbled over.
“What is it that you don’t like?” I asked. “You used to eat everything, and now it’s like you’re scared of food.”
She looked at me sheepishly and shrugged.
“You know that you’re lucky, right?” I said, leaning into a dad’s lecture. “Do you know how many parents don’t have time or the skill to make good, fresh food? Do you know how many kids grow up eating food from a box? So, what’s the problem?”
But instead of fretting about a serious discussion over the dinner table, the little muppet happily engaged, knowing that she couldn’t be eating if she was talking. And so, with her taking tiny forkfuls and me sweating with distress, we hashed out the change in her tastes. She prefers simple, naked fare.
