What is Tepache?

Tepache (pronounced Teh-pache, rhymes with Apache) is a popular drink in Mexico made from fermented pineapple rinds; it resembles a light beer. It has a zingy, refreshing flavor with low alcohol content, usually around 2 or 3%.

The word tepache comes from the Aztec language, Nahuatl, which means corn. Tepache was originally made from corn and used by the Aztec elite in religious ceremonies.

These days it is a popular Mexican drink often served in taquerias and sold by street vendors in a twisted plastic bag with a straw poking out. Recently, it has gained popularity, and mixologists are starting to experiment with it in craft cocktails. It’s easy to make and allows for some creativity in flavors.

My family, like many in Mexico, drink it for its health benefits, not just its refreshing zesty flavor.

Get Gutsy

Tepache has many health benefits. It aids digestion and is often served alongside greasy, delicious tacos to help the body break down fatty meat.

Many believe it blocks the formation of kidney stones. And if you already have kidney stones, it can help break them up before they become too painful.
