Bright Eyes Battle On
Artists inspire other artists. The poem below was written in response to a song sung by Art Garfunkel, “Bright Eyes.” This is a time of year when I seem to war within me on the themes in the song, and through prayer (and a retreat that I didn’t want to go to, but I digress), I’ve learned that I have a lot more to battle on about. I am weary, but I know God sends help, the right kind in the right time. Waiting is always my hardest part.
Little girl with eyes so bright…
Look at me — you were me, I am you.
Fight out the good fight.
Little girl with eyes so bright…
Don’t look at the night.
Don’t let the darkness dim your sight.
Little girl with eyes so bright…
Don’t dream of crossing the dark river.
Don’t let it steal your steam.
Little girl with eyes so bright…
The lies were sent to snuff you out,
But truth can keep that from coming about.
Little girl with eyes so bright…
Look up at the mountains with a strange gleam;
Walk away from that dark stream.
Little girl with eyes so bright…
Guard the light, and don’t let it fail.
Guard the light so you can sail.
