Ein Seesturm an der norwegischen Küste by Andreas Achenbach, image in the public domain

Dealing with all the loose ends in her life,
She dances solo on a cliff
Between the devil and the deep blue sea.
The devil keeps trying to cut in,
To dance with her in the pale moonlight.
Lost in her own world,
She keeps refusing.
The devil’s anger rises and the seas get more choppy.
She looks out,
Seeing a ghost of a memory
Walking across the water.
Irritated by one last attempt of cutting in,
She takes a leap of faith
And dances on the stormy seas.

Poem inspired by the following:

  • “Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight? I ask that of all my prey. I just like the sound of it.” — Line spoken by Joker in the 1989 Batman film
  • “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass…It’s about learning to dance in the rain.” — Vivian Greene
  • “I, with my partie, did lie on our poste, as betwixt the devill and the deep sea.” — Robert Monro
  • Concept of leap of faith, per wikipedia
  • Jesus walking on the water and His invitation to Peter, Matthew 14:22–33
