Being a founder.

Being a founder is never easy, as Kendall Flutey — Co-founder and CEO of Banqer — attests to when she joined us for the Kiwi Founder Series webinar.

“Being a founder, is… well, it’s a rollercoaster isn’t it. You get some awesome opportunities, and you’re challenging yourself, which I really love. But at the same time you’re stressed, you’re anxious, and you feel wholeheartedly responsible for the success of something, be it for your team members or your users. It’s a real juggling act.”

But, it’s really about how you manage it all, Flutey says. “For me it’s making sure my health is in check as a founder. You can’t leave at 5pm and forget about everything. Even if you manage to get out of the office at that time, it follows you around. It’s your baby, it’s everything. So keeping on top of both mental and physical health is super important for me. I’m in a good routine now of going to the gym to get that exercise in. If I’m getting stressed, I focus on recognising it early and taking some time out. For me, reading fiction, is a super good way of rising above that sort of stuff.” Most founders seem to be sprinting, but Flutey takes a more marathon-like approach to it, focusing on building a long-term, sustainable business. “We’re not like a lot of other startups in that regard, we want to have longevity to our business.”
