Note: This interview with Jason Han, Ground X’ CEO — was originally released by dongA via Naver in Korean on June 17th by reporter Shin Moo-Kyung. KlaytnCommunity provides an English translation for the global Klaytn community as we believe this interview manages to show why the average non-blockchain savvy user can benefit from using Klip by bringing a couple of real-life use cases and applications. In the end, that is what Klaytn is all about; bringing user-friendly mass adoption to millions of people. Another reason we’re quite pleased with this interview is that Jason Han stresses Ground X’ commitment to release a global version of Klip towards the end of this year — something the members of KlaytnCommunity are awaiting with much excitement as currently, only native Korean users are able to interact with Klip. Do note that some translation errors might have slipped in so please keep that in mind before deciding to act upon the content of this article.

To Jason Han & the entire Ground X team; The KlaytnCommunity team and all its Klaytneers hope the development of Klip progresses well and we’ll soon be able to actively manage our digital assets and interact with the Klaytn blockchain and all of its BApps through Klip😉💪 — KlaytnCommunity

Jason Han — CEO at Ground X

On June 4th 2020, at Ground X’s headquarters in Teheran-ro, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, Jason Han introduced Klip, Klaytn’s digital asset platform that was released the day before.

  • What is the main use case of Klip?

“Klip, which is Klaytn’s digital asset platform and hence blockchain-based is not just a wallet. Users will be able to manage (store & transfer) not just cryptocurrency, but also in-game items, shopping discount coupons, and mileage tickets in the form of NFTs. Our primary goal is to teach and make people aware that all existing tangible and intangible assets can be digitally expressed within KakaoTalk.”

Ground X introduced Klip as a service in Kakao Talk (South-Korea’s biggest mobile messaging application with over 50M monthly users) on June 3rd. To kick-off its launch, an early-bird event was held with thousands of users winning 50 KLAY each as an incentive to try out Klip’s features. Per Jason Han’s personal blog post and a translation offered by Klaytncommunity, the total number of sign-ups for Klip on the day of the release crossed 100,000 and about 160,000 as of June 12th.

  • How does Ground X plan to guide Klip’s users to digital asset management and increase adoption of Klaytn’s blockchain technology?

“We will take a two-step route to have our users experience the still unfamiliar and non-straightforward concept of managing your digital assets in a digital asset wallet. The first step is sending and receiving cryptocurrency within Klip (i.e. creating a wallet, sending and receiving KLAY and other Klaytn-based tokens). The second step is to manage real-life assets with tangible value such as in-game items or collectibles, shopping coupons, mileage tickets, and lottery tickets. These will be stored in Klip in the form of an NFT card (non-fungible token).”

“Currently, certain game characters can already be held in digital asset wallets. After downloading the blockchain-based game ‘Crypto Dragon’ — created by Kakao Games, a Kakao affiliate, you can transfer your own character (Dragon) to your digital asset wallet.”

  • Why would users want to store their digital assets themselves as opposed to having the emitting company keep ownership?

“As soon as in-game items and aviation mileages are manageable via Klip, the ownership of these digital assets is transferred to the users, not to the game and airline companies. The Klaytn blockchain will provide a decentralized, tamper-proof and transparent online ownership record of these assets.”

“We want to make it possible for individuals to easily issue digital assets in the future. For example, an influencer could issue and sell digital tickets in a clip to drink a cup of coffee with him. If MZ generations (millennials and Z generations) are free to issue and exchange various types of digital assets, they can be creative and find multiple ways to climb the ladder of success.”

  • It is said that there are no plans to integrate cryptocurrency exchanges within Klip. What is the reasoning behind this mindset?

“Earning commissions and other fees on users’ management of their digital assets are not part of our mission. As is plainly put on Klaytn’s webpage, our goal is to bring blockchain technology to millions of people and achieve mass adoption. In order to achieve this, we plan to work closely together with our regulators and authorities. For the same reason, users under the age of 19 were not able to participate in the early-bird event and we’re also collaborating with local authorities on making Klaytn-based assets available in offline stores.”

“Klip currently exists as a service within the Kakao Talk mobile messenger service. Per Klaytn’s roadmap, Klip will be released as a separate mobile application early half of this year and globally as well later on. Both Facebook (US), the Chinese government and Line in Japan are shifting to a higher gear and accelerating its investments for growing a blockchain ecosystem. Klip as a separate mobile application will help establish itself as a blockchain-based digital asset platform for the South-East Asian market and also globally.”
