Top 3 Diva of the 90s, easily

Celine Dion ranks in as probably somewhere in the top 3 all-time favorite female singers, particularly from the 1990s. I remember as a kid hearing the power diva trio of Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Celine Dion and thinking they could sing anything. All of their talents were undeniable.

Mariah Carey was singing whistle notes easier than most people were actually able to just whistle. Whitney had already established herself as a powerful diva emerging out of the mid-1980s and solidifying her superstar diva status throughout the 1990s in the music industry, along with her roles on the big screen as well.

Then there was Celine Dion. The French-Canadian youngster who had just won Eurovision for Switzerland in 1988 with the song, “Ne partez pas sans moi.” She was a rising star who would soon be singing for and being introduced to another country altogether, the United States of America.

Learning English and Garnering a Multilingual Following

English isn’t even Celine’s first language. Her earlier stuff had been in French. She had to learn English through singing and also attending Ecole Berlitz to learn the language. She hardly knew English before this and learned a lot of the language through emulating Top 40 hits from the American pop charts.

Since then, she’s also sung songs in Italian, Latin, Mandarin, Spanish, German, and Japanese. This tells me that not only is she talented in singing, but also in learning languages. Her English is obviously way better in the present day after singing in the language for over 30 years and living in the States with her residency in Las Vegas, Nevada. Knowing all of this for me keeps her solidly in the top 3 for female singers on my personal list of all time.

Movie Theme Icon Status

She’s since sung in movies such as Up Close and Personal, Titanic, Deadpool 2, Bicentennial Man, and Beauty and the Beast, among others. She has had a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame since 2004.

When you think of famous female Canadian singers of all time, she’s usually one of the first names you come up with in your head. She’s had massive success and has accumulated massive wealth. This would certainly suggest that she is talented.

The Haters are Just Wrong

Yet, I’ve run into many haters of her. Most of the time, I attribute their distaste for her to jealousy and lack of personal taste or different personal tastes. I even had a friend tell me once that he was so tired of hearing her sing, that hearing her sing made his ears bleed and ring and that she was talentless.

That statement right there sounds like a straight-up personal attack and a lack of good musical taste. A woman with a beautiful and diverse vocal range from Bb2-E6, especially when executed well wouldn’t be considered by any experts as lacking talent. The evidence of her talent is undeniable. I can understand the people who say that she’s not their type of music. That’s understandable.

If we all liked power ballad 90’s style pop, the world would be a pretty boring place. I just get perturbed and irked when you attribute that difference in taste to a lack of talent. You are not the authority on what a good musician or vocalist would sound like. Music may be an art form but it’s one of the more objective ones to measure, unlike actual canvas art. There is a form and a technique that needs to be followed for music to be considered good and Celine’s form and talent are on point.

Wide Selection of Music to Choose From and Many Covers

It’s not like she’s only sung in one type of genre either. Her collection in itself is not only mainly in French and English but she also has more upbeat tempo songs like “I Drove All Night” that definitely can feel like more of a club hit.

She’s also covered many classic hits. One of my favorites she’s covered of all time is “All By Myself” by Eric Carmen. We must also not forget that she also covered Meatloaf’s “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now” and elevated that song to heights never expected.

Influencing Parts of My Own Life in an Unexpected Way and Most People Would Agree Those Opinions are Crap

She’s also influenced my own personal life with her music in my church choir. When I was in the children’s choir, I changed enough of the song, “Because You Loved Me” to make it copyright-friendly but also God-friendly. So, I know I’ve used a lot of personal examples to explain why Celine Dion is not the talentless hack many people think she is, but I’ve also used plenty of evidence and showcased her success to show that she is definitely a force and one of the all-time greats.

I’m definitely not alone in my opinion that people who don’t like her just don’t like good music. Don’t come at me with those crappy opinions about her the next time you want to tell me you think she’s talentless. There’s plenty more overwhelming proof against your claim and I’m in the majority here when I say that I’ll continue to enjoy her music for generations.
