[Business & Human Rights] Key findings release and others
In a significant stride towards enhancing corporate accountability and advocating for human rights, KAMY is honored to share insights from two pivotal events that recently took place in Kuala Lumpur.
The first of these was the unveiling of the key findings of the National Baseline Report on the National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights (NAPBHR), held on October 25, 2023. This event, attended by YB Dato’ Sri Azalina Binti Othman Said and key representatives from the EU delegation to Malaysia, UNDP, and SUHAKAM. Spearheaded by the Legal Divisions Affair of the Prime Minister’s Department, alongside UNDP and Malaysia’s Human Rights Commission, the event focused on vital advancements in human rights, especially on environmental rights advocacy.
The report consist of three pillars; governance, labor and environment. It is a 2 years collaborative effort led by AmerBon, with lead authors
- IDEAS on governance;
- Dr. Andika Wahab from IKMAS UKM on labor; and
- Klima Action Malaysia — KAMY on environment
This seminal report serves as a baseline for corporate responsibility and accountability in Malaysia.
A key recommendation from this report is the constitutional amendment to recognise the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment as a fundamental human right, a critical step as we transition towards a low carbon economy.
National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights (NAPBHR) Steering Committee at the Malaysian Parliament
Following this, on November 11, we had the honour of presenting these findings to the National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights (NAPBHR) Steering Committee at the Malaysian Parliament. Chaired by YB Azalina, this meeting underscored our commitment to shaping a responsible business landscape, aligned with global standards such as the UNGP and OECD guidelines. We extend our gratitude to Jehan Aziz from UNDP and the team at AmerBon Advocates for their leadership in this endeavour.
As we reflect on these events and their implications for the future, we recognise the importance of collaboration across sectors. The involvement of businesses, financial institutions, local communities, and civil society organizations is crucial in fostering an economy that cares for people, communities, and the environment.
