There’s something special about baseball cards. For me, it reminds me of a better time. It reminds me of my grandfathers. My dad. My childhood.

I first started collecting baseball cards as a kid. It was Christmas 1987 and my grandfather bought me my first set, 1987 Topps. I was six years old. That was special. As a baseball fan at that age, I was hooked. It became a special way to bond with both of my grandfathers and my dad.

Growing up in Brooklyn, NY, I collected my favorite team — the New York Mets. Gary Carter and Tom Seaver were my two favorites to collect. My dad took me to many card shows as a kid. We loved it.

More recently, since my dad has passed, my passion for cards has come back — in a way of honoring his memory. Now, when I buy a card, it’s most likely a Brooklyn Dodgers card. Or, a Pee Wee Reese card — my dad’s baseball idol.

Two years ago, before the pandemic, I took my dad and daughter to a baseball card show in Charlotte. For my dad and I, it brought back many memories of all of the card shows he took me to as a kid. Even back then as a kid, I wanted vintage cards. Since my dad taught me how to play Strat-O-Matic at a young age, my thirst for baseball history was big. I wanted my cards to reflect that. I wanted cards from the 50s and 60s.

Since my dad’s passing in July, a lot has changed, but one thing has returned — my love of card collecting — in honor of him.

Over the last five months, I’ve collected Brooklyn Dodgers cards more than ever before. In a way, it makes me feel closer to him.

I’m so happy to be able to help host a card show at Truist Field on my birthday, January 8th. I’m looking forward to partnering with my buddy, Burke McKinney, on a great event. I know he will put on a great show!

And, I know my dad will be there with me in spirit, that’s for sure.

Hope to see you there!
