Brett Austin is a Charlotte, NC native. Over the past few days, Austin, 22, has had an opportunity to play in front of family and friends at BB&T Ballpark. And, he’s enjoyed every minute of it.

The former Providence High School standout was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the fourth round of last year’s draft out of North Carolina State University. The switch-hitting backstop was drafted just three rounds after his good buddy — number three overall pick Carlos Rodon — the top prospect in Chicago’s system.

On Monday, April 6, Rodon and Austin took part in a scrimmage game as the Charlotte Knights played host to the Davidson College Wildcats. Both Rodon — who started on the hill — and Austin — who started behind the plate — played for Davidson. It was like old times for the two, who were battery mates in college.

I had a chance to catch up with Brett after Monday’s game. We talked about playing in front of family and friends, his experiences at Spring Training, and more.
