On Thursday, March 16, 2021, the Chicago White Sox announced 13 roster moves after the game against the San Diego Padres. In total, eight of the 13 players were optioned to Charlotte.

Let’s take a look…

Out of the eight players optioned to Charlotte, two have spent time with the Knights previously — RHP Zack Burdi and catcher Seby Zavala.

RHP ZACK BURDI — In four appearances this spring out of Chicago’s bullpen, Burdi, 26, posted an 11.25 ERA (4.0 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 HR, 6 BB, 4 SO). The Downers Grove, IL native did not allow a run in his last appearance back on March 12 (1.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1SO).

Burdi made his major league debut on August 8, 2020 and went 0–1 with a 13.50 ERA for the White Sox last season in eight games (7.1 IP).

Over parts of two seasons (2016–17) with the Knights, Burdi is 1–4 with eight saves and a 3.47 ERA in 38 games (49.1 IP/73 SO).

He last pitched with the Knights in 2017 and was 0–4 with seven saves and a 4.05 ERA that season in 29 games (33.1 IP). He left a game in July with a strained right triceps and missed the rest of the season.

Burdi was also sidelined in 2018 while recovering from Tommy John surgery and had his 2019 season cut short because of a strained patella tendon in his right knee.

C SEBY ZAVALA — In eight games with the White Sox this spring, Zavala hit .333 (1-for-3). He made his major league debut with the White Sox on May 25, 2019 and appeared in five games with the team that season.

In parts of two seasons with the Knights, Zavala is hitting .230 (110-for-478) with 67 runs scored, 29 doubles, 22 home runs and 65 RBIs over 130 games. The 27-year-old backstop hit 20 home runs with the Knights in 2019 over 82 games.
