Former Knights Infielder Wins 2021 Gold Glove Award
On Sunday, November 7, 2021, Rawlings announced the winners of the 2021 Gold Glove Awards for the American League and National League.
Former Charlotte Knights infielder Marcus Semien, who played his first season with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2021 — and first-ever full season as a second baseman — won the American League Gold Glove Award at second base. Congrats, Marcus!
Semien played 162 games for the Blue Jays this year — 147 of those games at second base. The California native posted an impressive .985 fielding percentage with eight errors.
Before this season, Semien spent the majority of his career as a shortstop in the majors. Coming into 2021, he played just 29 games at second base, which put him in impressive company…
The 31-year-old infielder also had an impressive season at the plate with Toronto, hitting .265 with 39 home runs and 102 RBIs.
KNIGHTS CAREER
With the Knights, Semien appeared in parts of two seasons from 2013–14. Overall, he played in 115 games over those two seasons, including 32 games during the team’s final season in Fort Mill, SC in 2013. He hit .264 (33-for-125) with 20 runs scored, 11 doubles, one triple, four home runs, 17 RBIs, and four stolen bases that year.
In 2014, he started the season with the White Sox, but was optioned to the Knights on June 1. In 83 games with Charlotte before being promoted back to Chicago on September 2, he hit .267 (81-for-303) with 57 runs scored, 20 doubles, three triples, 15 home runs, 52 RBIs, and seven stolen bases. He ended up appearing in 64 games with the White Sox that year — his last in the organization.
