On January 26, the Chicago White Sox designated Romy Gonzalez for assignment. Just five days later, Gonzalez changed Sox and was a member of a new organization.

The Boston Red Sox claimed Gonzalez off waivers from the White Sox on January 31.

Gonzalez, 27, was originally selected in the 18th round of the June 2018 First-Year Player Draft by the Chicago White Sox. After being drafted, he quickly made his way through the organization — culminating with a breakout season in 2021.

2021 CAMPAIGN
In 2021, Gonzalez appeared over three levels in the organization (Birmingham, Charlotte and Chicago). The Miami, FL native combined to hit .283 (101-for-357) with 24 home runs and 61 RBIs between Double-A Birmingham and Charlotte (93 games). He also appeared in 10 games with the White Sox and hit .250 (8-for-32).

BARONS BREAKOUT
Gonzalez hit .267 (81-for-303) with 52 runs scored, 11 doubles, 20 home runs, 47 RBIs and 21 stolen bases in 78 games with Double-A Birmingham in 2021. At the time of his promotion to the Knights, his 20 home runs were tied for second in the Double-A South and his 47 RBIs were tied for fourth.

REMARKABLE STRETCH
Gonzalez earned a promotion to the Charlotte Knights on August 20, 2021 and he quickly stood out.

RO-MY GOODNESS
In his Triple-A debut on August 21, he hit two home runs, including a walk-off, three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to lead the Knights to a 7–5 win over the Durham Bulls. Overall that day, he went 2-for-4 with two home runs, two runs scored and five RBIs in his debut. He connected on his first Triple-A home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Two innings later, he hit the game-winning home run. He followed that up with four hits and three RBIs on Sunday. In two career Triple-A games, he had six hits, two home runs and eight RBIs. He finished his second career Triple-A game going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBIs. He recorded seven hits over his first 10 career Triple-A at-bats with six going for extra bases (three doubles and three home runs).

KING IN THE QUEEN CITY
He appeared in nine games with the Knights and compiled a .344 batting average (11-for-32) with six runs scored, four doubles, three home runs, 10 RBIs and one stolen base. Then, he earned his first career promotion to the majors (September 1, 2021) — and made his Major League Debut with the White Sox on September 3, 2021. He hit .250 (8-for-32) with four runs scored, three doubles and two RBIs in 10 games before being sent back to the Knights on September 21.

2022 & 2023
Gonzalez entered the 2022 season ranked as the number 15 prospect in Chicago’s system by Baseball America. He began 2022 with the Knights — but injuries limited his time that year — as well as in 2023. He played just 33 games with the Knights and 32 games with the White Sox in 2022. In 2023, he was limited to just 44 games overall — all with the White Sox.

On behalf of the Knights organization, good luck with Boston, Romy! Your debut with the Knights in 2021 — as well as your kindness to all of us here in Charlotte — are something we’ll never forget!
