WHITE SOX INVITE 21 TO SPRING TRAINING
With the 2020 Minor League Baseball season cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Tomshaw is one of the many players who didn’t get a chance to play a full season on the diamond.
Tomshaw, 32, officially returns to Chicago’s organization in 2021 for the fourth consecutive year (2018-present).
Originally selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 42nd round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, Tomshaw put together a solid effort with both the Double-A Birmingham Barons and the Knights in 2019.
Overall with the Knights in 2019, the Kingston, NY native posted a 4–2 record with a 3.93 ERA and 32 strikeouts over 36.1 IP (11 games/5 games started). After a promotion to Charlotte from Double-A Birmingham on May 3, Tomshaw made seven appearances with the Knights in the month of May — six of those seven appearances from out of the bullpen. On June 1, he was assigned back to the Barons.
Once he returned to the Knights on August 8, Tomshaw proved to be a solid contributor to the Knights down the stretch. Over his final four starts, he posted a 2–1 record with a 1.57 ERA over 23.0 IP. On August 24 at BB&T Ballpark against the Norfolk Tides — with the Knights in a pennant race — Tomshaw allowed just two runs over six innings pitched en-route to a 5–3 win. He struck-out a career-high 11 batters and improved to 2–0 with a 1.42 ERA in three starts (19.0 IP) since returning from Double-A. He allowed just one run on five hits over four innings in his last start of the season on August 30 at Norfolk.
Overall in 2019 with the Barons, Tomshaw went 5–5 with a 2.40 ERA in 15 games (12 starts). For the season, he went 9–7 with a 2.90 ERA over 26 games (17 games started) between his time with the Barons and the Knights. He tossed 111.2 IP and struck-out 118 batters.
For his career, Tomshaw, a 2017 mid-season All-Star, has appeared in parts of nine seasons in the minors and owns a 66–55 record with six saves and a 3.90 ERA over 226 games (162 games started) in 1,032.2 IP.
