Where Have I Gone…

It’s easy to write the “Knight Fever” blog when it deals with baseball. Today’s blog is a little harder to write since it has to deal with something else… me.

My last blog post took place in the Media Room at the Winter Meetings in Las Vegas. I was excited to be there and very excited be a part of a special week for MLB and MiLB. Everything was going well — until something wasn’t going well anymore. I got sick.

On Tuesday, December 11th, I came down with a fever. It wasn’t a fever for more cowbell, it was a fever that hit me like a ton of bricks. I was knocked out. The next day, I made my way over to an Urgent Care in Vegas. Not the best way to spend my time in Vegas, but it was needed. I was tested for the flu — which I didn’t have — so they sent me on my way. The rest of the day was spent in my hotel room.

On Thursday, December 13th, we made the trek back to Charlotte — and I had a fever on the long plane ride home. To keep this short and to the point, I saw my doctor the next day and was sent to the hospital for a chest X-Ray — which turned out to show nothing. Just three days later, I was in the Emergency Room looking for more answers. Still struggling with fever, I was given a CAT scan, which showed gallstones. A few days later, my blood test came back and showed a staph infection. Luckily, my doctor didn’t believe that, so he re-tested me and his test showed nothing. No staph infection.

I struggled through the following week, still with fever each day. Fast forward to December 26th — my 16th straight day with fever — and my daughter’s birthday. Instead of spending time with her, I was back in the ER looking for more answers. This time — after waiting 10 hours — an ultrasound showed that my gallbladder was a bit more inflamed. Two days later, I saw a surgeon, who was ready to operate. I spent my New Year’s Eve in surgery having my gallbladder removed. After 23 straight days of fever — and no more gallbladder — things began to improve. Still, I needed time to recover.

So, I binge-watched MLB Network, a show on Netflix called Zoo — which was pretty good — and Andrew “Dice” Clay’s show on Showtime called Dice.

I returned to work for a few hours here and there last week, but it was tough. Finally, today, after all that time — 35 days — I’m back in the office for what I plan to be a full day.

Today is two weeks since my surgery, so I’m hoping to be getting closer to being the same old me. While I’d love to get back to the way I was, I don’t know that I ever will or can again. Anyone who works in Minor League Baseball knows that this job is rough — and I am a workaholic. My 120-hour-a-week schedule, combined with poor eating habits, and no sleep, is not what I need right now or probably ever again. So, I plan to take things easy for as long as I can.

Anyways, since I haven’t posted anything on my personal social media for over a month (I did keep all of the Charlotte Knights social channels active, however)— I wanted to share my whereabouts. It’s been a tough time, but I’m fortunate for what I have and I wouldn’t change anything in the world. Thanks for the support.

Words of Wisdom: What happens in Vegas doesn’t stay in Vegas.
