A Hospice Nurses Poem
Dedicated to all of the patients
This short poem is dedicated to all of the patients who have allowed me to stand present for their last moments, a true honor.
I see you.
Hazy window rays cast a warm glow upon your pale, purpling skin.
She weeps at your side holding your hand, as I, her shoulder.
Decades of life and love flutter behind your lids.
I hear you.
During our twelve hours, and beyond.
Your ragged and weary gasps,
oh, how they echo in my slumber.
I feel you.
One foot lingers in my existence-
the other has crossed the veil.
Death is near, you feel it too.
You draw your last breath-
You are free.
I will comfort her,
for as long as it takes.
My soul aches, not for long.
Gratitude fills my heart, rushes my veins.
How meaningful it is, to be chosen-
to guide you through the door.
