Back to Our Moment

A poem about the power of awareness and its ability to thwart the mind’s attempts to steal our precious moments

Just me in your t-shirt,
your head on my chest
Our own private world
This might be the best

Wary of what’s coming,
in steps a third:
My mind trying to take over
It wants to be heard

“The world is too mean,
your time together too short

You’ll be alone soon
and that’s going to hurt”

But what will hurt more
is what my mind’s doing now
Taking over our time
This I can’t allow

While it may be true
that our time together is fleeting
Those thoughts are much less important
than watching our hearts’ timed beating

“It’s kinda creepy,”
that’s what you say
How quickly they managed
to sync up this way

Aware of what’s happening
I choose to be here
“Go away”, I tell the voice
“You shall not interfere”

“I know you’re trying to protect,
to prep me for the sad
But this moment right now
it’s all that we have”

To come back to this moment
I breathe deep and slow
Inhaling this moment,
Letting breath and voice go

Now I’m back here with you
And it’s truly the best
Just me in your t-shirt,
your head on my chest
