Bruised by the Night

For me, waking up is difficult.

You wake up smiling.
I feel sick and groggy.

You had happy dreams.
I’m still shaking because mine were night terrors.

You’re rejuvenated and alive.
I’m sluggish and disoriented.

Your eyes are clear and bright.
Mine are cloudy and teary.

You smile at the sunlight.
I hide under the blankets.

You’re looking forward to the day.
I’m enveloped by despair.

You spring to your feet.
I stay in bed.
