Carpe Diem
Don’t let the summer or autumn of your life turn into hazy shades of winter
time waits for no one
judge harvest time with your heart
taste all the ripe fruit
may morning star comfort you
during dark nights of your souls
Diana C.’s and May More’s KTHT (Know Thyself, Heal Thyself) September Writing Prompts sparked this poem. I’ll talk a bit about my process before I get to substantive notes, giving readers, who don’t want to hear my thoughts behind the poem, time to bolt.
The prompts include this suggestion:
- “Write about all the things time couldn’t take from you”
From that, I created the first three lines and from that which stood for a while as a hybrid haiku/senryu, I chose the title, Carpe Diem.
Then I looked back at the prompts and saw this bonus suggestion:
- “Venus’ vineyards”
Ah, look at that. “Vineyard” ties to the historically correct, as opposed to common usage, meaning of carpe diem. Bear with me and I’ll connect the dots bouncing like a pinball off the grey matter bumpers of my brain and hopefully, none of us will suffer concussions.
