from a crack in the sidewalk,
their labor engrossing.

consider her ways, and be wise

Here and gone,
my ears are compressed
by a sonic boom
from fighter jets
on a training run.

the secret place of thunder

A leaking irrigation pipe
causes water to seep
from under a landscape stone.

the waters of Meribah

Firecracker flowers are resplendent
in red wrappers with frayed ends;
they are silent
but sometimes whisper.

ministers of fire

A vacant lot has returned
to the wandering wilderness
that it always was.
